7th Annual Orca Recovery Day a Rainy Success

On Saturday, October 19, we celebrated Orca Recovery Day at beautiful Skykomish River Park. Volunteers of all ages put in the work to install over 75 native plants at the park. These trees and shrubs will help filter stormwater and improve the water quality of the nearby Skykomish River.

It was a beautiful, sunny July morning when ten Snohomish County high school students bounded down the well-traveled trails of Marysville’s Jennings Park and into the Allen Creek floodplain. These students are participants of Snohomish Conservation District’s brand new Youth Engaged in Sustainable Systems (YESS) program, a five-week curriculum exploring careers in natural resources while building job skills and earning summer school credit.

People of all ages are invited to attend, but the event will be most exciting to families with children in kindergarten through 5th grade. Bathrooms will be available! Park near the playground and tennis courts.

The theme for our 6th Annual Youth Art Contest is aquatic macroinvertebrates! The contest is open to pre-K through 12th grade. Participants must be a resident or student of Snohomish County or Camano Island. Submissions will be accepted online February 6-17 2023.

The Northwest Regional competition will take place on March 23, 2023 at the Brightwater Center in Woodinville and the state competition will be held mid-May. The state champion gets to travel to the national competition and test their skills against winning teams from the US and Canada.

On July 16, we had an action-packed Youth Education Day, hosted by the City of Mountlake Terrace. Families joined in on the fun: 36 adults and 34 youth ventured to Lake Ballinger to learn about water conservation and how they can protect the rivers, streams, and lakes in their communities.
