2020 Lake Stevens Cascade Award Presented at City Council Meeting
/In the previous two years, we have had the pleasure to announce the Cascade Award winners at outdoor functions along the lake’s edge (2019 and 2018 Celebrations). This year, due to COVID-19, we changed our tack and moved virtual, and were able to garner a spot on the City Council agenda. It was a nice opportunity to talk about the I Love Lake program and show our gratitude for the partnership we have with the City of Lake Stevens to keep the lake healthy.
Cascade Award Qualifications and 2020 Finalists
To win the Cascade Award, the gardener must have a beautiful, sustainable and lake-friendly landscape. Finalists for the Cascade Award are ranked based on the following criteria:
Visual appeal
Stormwater infiltration practices
Diversity of plants
Smart watering
Mulched garden beds
Right plant, right place
Minimal chemical use
This year’s Cascade Award finalists were Leah Everett and Jacque Longley. Both people clearly care about the natural environment around them and how their actions affect the lake’s health. Kari Quaas, who leads the I Love Lake program at SCD, and Jon Stevens, who is the Stormwater Technician at the city, were able to tour both properties in July and were impressed.
