Food Security Grows in Snohomish with Help from NACD

The National Association of Conservation Districts (NACD) provided Snohomish Conservation District with an Urban Agriculture Conservation Grant in 2017 to help grow our Lawns to Lettuce and Plant A Row programs. Again in 2021, we were one of 20 conservation districts across 14 states to receive funding. The goal of our work was to “grow and expand partnerships with organizations working within the local food system to further agroforestry knowledge, build soil health, address climate resilience, improve crop production, and increase food security in underserved communities.” To that end, Joe Crumbley, our Urban Agriculture Program Coordinator, has been on the move at multiple sites throughout Snohomish County installing raised beds, filling them with healthy soils, providing vegetable starts, water catchment, and compost bins, as well as providing education on maintenance and how to successfully grow food.
