And, The Winner of the Youth Earth Day Challenge Is....

Us, of course!

We were once again overjoyed with the submissions, interest, talent and creativity of the youth around our district. Rosemary Hopson, our Washington Service Corps / Americorps Youth Educator, led the challenge with daily videos explaining basic environmental terminology to help illustrate how our actions can help the Earth.

I am really proud of all of them, I think a lot of hard work went into these projects.

We challenged kids of all ages to think of their favorite place to go. It could be a movie theatre, their house, a family farm, etc. They then needed to make a drawing, painting, or model made of recycled materials of their favorite place.

After building their favorite place we challenged kids to make it a green building. Green buildings are areas that are designed to have smaller environmental impacts. They could add solar panels, add rain barrels, a rain garden and more.  We asked kids to make 3 green and 1 fun improvements to their favorite place!

  1. What is the place that you chose to build?

  2. Please tell us/label the 3 green improvements you added?

  3. Why did you pick those improvements?

Relief for Parents - Fun for Students

“Nate was SO excited!” — Diane Ottem, Nate Ottem’s parent

“Wow- Thank you! I will pass this on to Eleanor when she returns from her bike ride. She will be so excited. This was 100% her doing. She was obsessed with completing this and doing it her way. ;)  We have paint all over our hardwood floors from her- but it was worth it to see her get excited about this project.” — Deborah R, Eleanor Ridgeway’s parent
