Regarding Chickens
/We were asked….
Any chance you have any chicken-friendly plant info? I am hoping to add some potted plants to my chicken yard.
Here was Carrie Brausieck, our farm planner’s, response:
Most plants are planted on the perimeter of the chicken run as chickens can do a lot of damage to plants. Plants that might work directly in a run are small evergreen shrubs like juniper and maybe lavender as they may not kill these plants.
Vines that can climb the perimeter of the coop might be things like grape vines, climbing roses, nasturtiums, peas that chickens can pick at through the run, but not kill.
Plants to grow in a garden and through into the run for chickens to pick at are:
Basil, Borage, Catnip, Cilantro, Dill, Fennel, Lemon Balm, Marjoram, Mint, Oregano, Parsley, Rosemary, Sage, Tarragon, Thyme, Calendula, Chamomile
Kale, Lettuce, Swiss Chard
If you want to try some of these plants in the coop in pots, then you may want to protect them in some way if the chickens are picking at the plants.
