Growing Groceries: Weeding & Watering

  • WSU Snohomish County Extension 600 128th Street Southeast Everett, WA, 98208 United States (map)

Our ninth class in the series will focus on weeds and water in our gardens. While our maritime winters and springs are very wet our summers are often as dry as a desert leaving crops gasping for water by mid-July! And as for the weeds, they are happy to grow anytime!

Jeff Thompson, WSU Snohomish County Master Gardener and low volume irrigation instructor at Edmonds Community College, will share his strategies for applying water in the most efficient way possible for healthier vegetable gardens. His methods include the simple (mulching, planting strategies), to the more complex (drip systems), both commercial and homemade, along with other water-saving techniques.

Weeds overwhelming your garden? Kate Ryan of Soil Sisters Plants & Produce will share what she’s learned in over 30 years of growing vegetables, herbs, and flowers in Western Washington. A self-professed lazy gardener, she’s tried just about everything touted to reduce or eliminate weeds, settling on a few safe and sustainable strategies that help her stay on top of the weeds.

No matter if you only have a tiny apartment deck, small garden space, or plenty of acreage you can grow fresh, healthy food in a healthier, more environmentally friendly way.

The WSU Snohomish County Growing Groceries program brings beginning and experienced gardeners together with speakers and topics focused on growing healthy food using sustainable gardening practices.

Developed over the last several years, the program’s goal is to increase our communities’ access to fresh, healthy food by teaching the latest research-based techniques for growing food.
