Managing Red Alder: A two-day educational workshop for property owners
Do you have alders on your property? Red alder (Alnus rubra) is one of the most common native broadleaved trees in western Washington. This moisture-loving tree is most common in riparian areas near streams and wetlands, where it contributes to high-quality habitat and clean water. Property owners will learn techniques, tips, and strategies to manage their alders at the Alder Management Workshop on Friday, October 6 from 5:00 to 8:30 p.m. and Saturday, October 7, 2017 from 9:30 am to 5:30 p.m. at Weston High School 4407 172nd St NE, Arlington, WA 98223.
Washington State University Extension and Snohomish County Surface Water Management will host this event that features classroom sessions and a field trip tour. This two-day workshop will take a comprehensive look at both the challenges and opportunities that red alder presents to property owners. Sessions will be led by state, local, university, and industry experts in hardwood silviculture, streamside ecology and management, wildlife, regulations, and local hardwood markets
The cost to attend the full workshop (including all sessions, Friday dinner, Saturday lunch, and the field trip tour) is $60 per person or $100/couple (same household or ownership) before September 23 and $80/$120 September 23 until 5pm October 4. A Friday only registration is available for property owners for whom timber harvest is not applicable and is $30 per person or $70/couple beforeSeptember 23 and $50/70 until 5pm October 4. Children attend for free. There is a special student and Master Gardener rate (call for details).
