Snohomish Conservation District Seeks Two Board Members
Snohomish Conservation District has two volunteer supervisor positions open beginning in 2010, one elected and one appointed, for three-year terms on its Board of Supervisors. An election will be held on Tuesday, Feb 9th, from 2:00 pm – 6:00 pm at the District office in Lake Stevens for the elected position. The polling place is located at 528 91st Ave NE, Ste A, Lake Stevens, Washington. Potential appointees must submit a completed application to the District by January 12, 2010. All registered voters who own or occupy land within the District, which includes Camano Island, are eligible to vote and run for office. The candidates may be required to be the owner or operator of a farm, depending on the current composition of the conservation district board of supervisors. A conservation district supervisor is a public official who serves without compensation and who sets policy and direction for the conservation district. Published election procedures can be viewed at the Snohomish Conservation District office and are also available from the Washington State Conservation Commission. Candidates
For the elected position, there is one candidate, Steven VanValkenburg from Arlington. Here is more about Steve:
Steve was born in Mount Vernon, Washington and raised on a farm in the Skagit Valley. He graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1967 and received his AA degree from Skagit Valley College in 1969. While growing up in the valley, he raised beef cattle and horses as 4-H and FFA projects and worked on area beef and crop farms. Steve graduated with a BS in Agriculture from Washington State University in 1971 and received his BS in Vocational Technical Education from WSU in 1972. While at WSU, he gained additional experience in the dairy industry as a resident worker at the WSU research dairy. Steve taught Agricultural Education for thirty years; his first year at Bellingham Meridian High School and the next twenty-nine at Arlington High School, retiring in 2002. During his teaching career, Steve also found part-time work in the timber industry and as a maintenance worker for area farmers. He is currently employed by Arlington Hardware and Lumber and keeps busy repairing and building agricultural and forestry equipment in his shop. Steve and his wife Cindy live on a small farm in northern Snohomish County.
